Fiery red is all the rave these days. Chemicals are not. In the ancient world dyeing the hair with henna was common practice. The green leaf powder not only dyed the hair a brilliant color, but it also made the hair very thick and strong. People are returning to the use of natural henna to dye their hair, and Egyptian henna is probably the best on the market. Our Egyptian henna helps produce a very bright stain in a very short time. Can be used for henna body decorating as well. Scroll down to read more.

Size: 8 oz.

Dreamy stories of ancient Egyptian beauty rituals have long sparked rumors and even inspired Hollywood films. But are these rituals merely archaic tales or are they bona fide facts? One thing is for certain. Egyptians loved their henna. Henna leaves grow on a bush. The bush loves the dryness of the desert, making the Sahara a prime residence for henna to grow and increase in its lawsone content. The lawsone content is higher in the younger leaves than in the older ones and is concentrated in the vein. The leaves are plucked from the trees, and then allowed to dry in the sun. Traditionally a stone mill is used to crush the dried leaves into a fine powder. The powder is then sifted and sold in the local market.

If traveling down the Nile on a felucca or traveling across desert by camel back, how would one purchase some powdered henna? Look for a Bedouin caravan or stop by a bazaar. Traveling Bedouins still trade their goods today, but if a marketplace is more your thing a felucca can bring you to the shore of some of the oldest bazaars. Travel down winding alley ways lined with colorful shops and any of the herbal shopkeepers will happily assist you. Amidst shelves burgeoning with exotic spices of reds and browns, roots like hairy claws, translucent gums of pink and white, a jar of green, fragrant powder is summoned. A half kilo or so is traded like gold to reminisce in a beauty ritual older than the pyramids themselves.

How to use: Put 1-3 tablespoons (dependent on hair length) of henna powder into a glass bowl. Add enough warm water to make a slightly runny paste. Apply the paste to wet hair. Some people prefer to wrap the hair with plastic wrap to enhance the color. The longer you leave the paste in the more vibrant the color will be. Leave in for at least an hour. Some people leave it in overnight. The paste can be mixed with different botanicals to obtain different colors. Rinse the paste out well. The more times the henna is applied to the hair over time, the darker the stain will become. WARNING: The henna color will last for several months and will not wash out.
